Daily digest: Yemen
2026-09-20Escalating hostilities along Yemen's western coast and southern Taiz frontlines have led to a significant increase in displacement.
Hostilities intensified between September 9 and 14, resulting in a 135 percent increase in displacement since September 8. The number of displaced individuals continues to rise, with many families experiencing repeated displacement. Seasonal precipitation predictions indicate above-normal rainfall across most of northern and eastern Africa and the Middle East from October through December.
Yemen's acute food security crisis is driven by import dependency, rising prices, global humanitarian funding deficits, and severe climate impacts. Funding for the humanitarian response remains well below requirements.
Nearly 94,000 people have been displaced by the recent escalation in hostilities. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable and require urgent health and protection services. An estimated 18.3 million people face acute food insecurity, with over half the population in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
The specific locations of the most recent displacements and the immediate needs of the newly displaced populations are not yet covered in recent reporting.
